I love that the women Ellen von Unwerth photographs embody the sex symbols of years past like Brigitte Bardot, Marilyn Monroe, Jayne Mansfield...

I mostly respond to her black and white photos versus her color photography, the stark black and white just pops more! Her subjects are portrayed in very sexy settings, but kind of reminds me of when Bettie Page was breaking down barriers and walls in the 1950s with fetish photography, there's still some cuteness, some cheekiness to them.

I often wish I had my little own space to do all my work and these lovely vintage inspired home offices have got me a bit green with envy! So inspiring!

I love that mix of modern meets industrial meets vintage. When I say vintage, I usually refer to a more feminine look and not just something that is older. And for industrial, to me it is more masculine. Maybe I can say I like very androgynous rooms?

Katherine Hepburn Vintage Style Icon

With stout resolve, she almost single-handedly broke down the dress code for women by insisting on wearing men’s trousers on set and off, everywhere and all the time. Her style was so informal and untraditional that she never, even after becoming a star, owned a dress or skirt of her own. One of her many awards came from the Council of Fashion Designers of America in 1986 – in recognition of her role as non-conformist in modern fashion.

Vintage 1960s Suit

Loving this Jackie O inspired suit pattern but also love that it's a bit more youthful. It is a Petites pattern after all. I love that in the patterns description Petites in the 1960's meant 5'1 and under! (I would have been petite...now I'm SUPER petite, haha!)

If I could sew I would whip up this adorable vintage 60s suit separates, probably in large black and white herringbone print with big mod buttons!

Vintage 1950s Inspired Fashion

There were so many 1950s inspired fashion editorials shot last year (as well as many inspired by the 60s and 70s). I'm hoping 2011 is the year of the 20s, 30s, and 40s. Actually... maybe even earlier than that! I'd love to see trends from the 18th century come back, in small doses... (wearing 3 ft plumes a la Georgiana Spencer perhaps?)

I love the vintage 1950s inspired hats in this editorial and the full circle skirts. There are similar style vintage hats available at Adorevintage.

Wearing vintage clothing doesn't have to be complicated and you shouldn't look like you're going to a costume party (unless you ARE going to a costume party, in which case, vintage it up!).

How to Wear Vintage: Illustrated Blooms Blouse

The vintage 1950s "Illustrated Blooms Blouse available at Adorevintage ($68.00) has a classic shape with feminine details, so a great pair of khaki trousers, such as these by See by Chloe would be oh so chic and so very Audrey Hepburn. Modernize the look with retro inspired shades and a buttery soft leather satchel. To finish off, dollop a cloche inspired straw hat on your head, we recommend a flouncy side ponytail with this look!

The Shopping List:
1.] Vintage 1950s Blouse at Adorevintage.com
2.] Low Slung Pleat pants by See By Chloe at La Garconne
3.] Summer straw hat by Stella McCartney at Netaporter.com
4.] Retro sunglasses by Cutler + Gross at Netaporter.com
5.] "Covet" Bag by Rebecca Minkoff available at Stefanibags.com

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure to style Raina Hein (mostly known for being runner up on America's Next Top Model Cycle 14) for a test shoot with the talented Sade Williams.

Raina Hein by Sade Williams

It was a fun easy shoot in L.A. in easy urban clothes. As a wardrobe stylist I'm always challenged to not dress everyone in pretty vintage dresses and add cardigans and little hats to every ensemble... ^_^ so I was quite pleased with the beautiful images that were captured without it getting too girlie as I can very easily lean to.

Raina is one of the sweetest girls I've met, she's just like how she appeared on the show (which I asked many questions about... "what's Tyra really like?") I actually got to style Raina twice, those photos I'll post up once I receive more of them! I hope you enjoyed the photos!

You can view more of my styling work on my online portfolio www.rodellee.com but it's still under construction...

P.S. - If you feel like being jealous, Raina is wearing ONLY mascara in these photos. What a lucky gal!!! She says she gets her luminous skin from years of living in wintry cold Minnesota and washing her face and scalding hot water!
