Dress - simple, conservative in color.
Shoes - Oxford or strap. Practical and low heel. Leather or reptile skins.
Hosiery- Sturdy cotton, rayon
Coats- simply cut and tailored.
Hat- Practical with brim
Gloves- Heavy leather, plain pull on.
Accessories- Leather purse, plain handkercief, only necessary jewelry.

Very helpful post, the forties are my favourite era. I wear t bar strap shoes, they 'feel' right but it's good to have that confirmed. I cannot wear frumpy shoes even if they are vintage!

Third from the right looks a bit like Jerry Hall (not to insinuate she is 80 years old... more that she has classic style ... phew *saved*). And that white hat with the red trim is simply glamour-on-a-stick.
