I strive to learn something new about vintage clothing every day and that usually includes leafing through old catalogs and vintage magazines as well as browsing through the thousands of vintage sewing patterns online. These vintage 1930s sewing patterns are all from Etsy and really illustrate the gorgeous frocks that many women made at a time when mass produced clothing wasn't the norm.

Vintage Sewing Patterns: 1930s Dresses

My sewing skills are very limited to mending seams, sewing on buttons, and fixing little repairs. My mother on the other hand is an amazing seamstress and could whip up one of these dresses (without a pattern!) in a day. It's really quite amazing that my Mom is so skilled with clothing construction and I am just learning how to sew straight seams.

  1. I love these! I wish I had the time and patience to learn how to sew. My grandmother was a seamstress and my own mother has great sewing skills but I'm not quite sure they were passed on to me. Maybe someday I will take the time to learn.

  2. I know exactly how you feel. My Mom is a great seamstress too, even has her own shop and she have tried to teach me how to sew so many times, but I'm just too impatient. Luckily she helps me out whenever I need to sew something. I have know idea what to do, when she's not here anymore.

    The patterns are absolutely beautiful!

  3. Sewing is hard, I really wish I had been taught from a young age - I was taught cross-stitch, lace-making, buttons, etc, but not making clothes from patterns. I am a bit of a perfectionist so if I sew something wonky I have to unpick and redo until I get it just right! Very time-consuming.

I did like looking at these patterns though and having a fantasy about which one I would sew! Thanks for sharing them.

  4. These patterns are so beautiful the detail on them is amazing. I sew a lot, but these patterns scare me with all their careful shoulder details and soft folds. Was every home seamstress that skilled?
