A friend of mine had posted these vintage photos of showgirls in the circus dating from the 1940s and 1950s on facebook and immediately I had to see more! These photos are culled from The Retronaut originally and I first found them here at Flavorwire.

The vintage showgirl costumes are so grand aren't they? I love all the feather headresses, the sequined bodices, and those amazing tutus! All the women look so charming and whimsical, reminds me of when I was younger and I wanted to run away and join a circus with nothing in my little suitcase but my ballet costumes and pointe shoes!

You can find even more photos from this series Circus Showgirls 40s-50s Rare Photos.

  5. :D I don't really need to tell you how much I fall over for pictures like these, I'm sure it's pretty obvious!!! And at 26 I still want to run away to a 1930's circus with a wee suitcase full of sequined gowns and costumes! Though I know it would not have been quite so romantic! :) Zoë xx

    1. Yes yes! And I'm 28, LOL! Have you seen "The Circus" (1928) with Charlie Chaplin? J'adore!

    2. Yes! So wonderful! I was lucky enough to include the history of traveling circuses and freak shows into my dissertation research at uni and how this related to art history, so read a lot and 'had' to watch all the films I could find on the subject, fact or fiction! Was an indulgence for me! Before the stress hit me and tore my world apart haha! :) It's quite an obsession though! :) xxx
